B. TOPIC SUMMARY

Chapter Two of the legal manual addresses the issue of antitrust regulation in the context of medical staff relations (see Chapter Two, Section H). This topic provides an outline of antitrust law and policy. Specifically it covers the various antitrust statutes; their application to PHDs; and the consequences of a violation. Further, the topic addresses the various sources of law which significantly limit the application of antitrust law to PHDs and PHD officials. The topic's purpose is to introduce the basic concept of antitrust law in order to facilitate an understanding of the legal status of the cooperative activities in which PHDs are participating or contemplating. A full discussion of cooperative activities may be found in Topic IV, Change and PHD Law.
